When slow and steady is everything
Protecting and transporting nuclear waste is serious business. The idea of carrying spent nuclear fuel across political boundaries in the U.S. was rejected years ago in favor of storing it locally, but safe handling is still an issue. The radioactive material is isolated long-term in concrete casks, which are stored at independent spent fuel storage installation (ISFSI) sites within the facilities. Moving the spent fuel from the reactor into this storage is an involved process, requiring precise, deliberate motion—with many safety measures taken along the way. The process needs to be accomplished per strict guidelines supplied by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). (Fluid Power World / March 2015)

MOTION CONTROLLERS IN COMBINED WORKCELLS STREAMLINE LEAF-SPRING FORMING
Joining workcells together and streamlining output from one stage to the next, if done correctly, is a surefire way to boost metalforming productivity. One company proving this out, Dayton Parts, Harrisburg, PA, manufactures for the vehicle aftermarket. Part of a manufacturing operation that dates to the 1920s, the company's leaf-spring production process was upgraded this past year to automate and connect the leaf punching and forming processes into a smooth flow. Adaptive Amplitude Control makes Testing and Tuning Easy
December 23, 2014 - Battle Ground, WA - Delta Computer Systems, Inc. announces a new feature in Delta's RMC family of motion controllers that simplifies tuning in cyclic testing applications that use sine, triangle and square waves with servo hydraulics. By implementing easy-to-modify user programs within Delta's RMCTools software, a testing process can now perform adaptive amplitude and offset control. In cyclic testing, adaptive amplitude control solves these problems:
- Systems change after many cycles are run and the original tuning may need correction.
- Testing often involves different frequencies requiring different gains. Tuning multiple gain sets for different frequencies is often time consuming.
