NFPA's Technology Roadmap for Fluid Power
At Purdue University in June, Delta's Jacob Paso was a committee member updating the NFPA's Technology Roadmap for Fluid Power.
This has proven to be very useful for guiding fluid power research by educational institutions.
At Georgia Tech in July, Paso was also part of the committee that came up with a new fluid power manufacturing roadmap - focused on improvements to the manufacture of fluid power components and systems, and resulting improvements to the manufacturing sector served by fluid power technology. |

Motion Controller Automates Hydrostatic Pressure Testing
A flexible hydrostatic test system for the oil and gas industry must precisely measure a wide range of pressures. Because the items tested vary widely, most testing is done manually. A test engineer sets appropriate parameters, and a skilled operator adjusts the pumping system for the specimen under test. After the technician sets up the test, he or she is usually seated at the pressure source and controls the specified pressure. The human interaction lacks precision and repeatability; each time the test is performed, there is a variation in results. In extreme cases, the maximum rated pressure is exceeded, causing damage. CUSTOM FEEDBACK SOLVES REAL PROBLEMS
The October 2014 issue of Hydrualics & Pneumatics introduced the concept of preprocessing (custom-combining) of data from multiple sensors to enhance the quality of the feedback. The technique can also protect against bad feedback and sensor failures being processed by a closed-loop control algorithm. This article discusses some real-life examples that benefited from custom feedback processing. (Hydraulics & Pneumatics / August 2015)

Machine Integration Simplified
by Rick Meyerhoefer
Whether you're building a new sawmill machine or retrofitting an old one to improve mill productivity, it's good to consider functionally partitioning the machine's supervisory, computing and control resources to employ the best system element for each task. Even relatively simple applications involving motion can benefit from the use of an intelligent, programmable motion controller which has built-in functions and support software to make controlling and optimizing the motion easier. System integrator Automated Control Solutions of Hot Springs, Ark. has been making PLC vs. motion controller trade-offs as a regular part of its machine development work for over a decade. The company has just completed the control system for a planer at the Suwannee Lumber mill in Cross City. (Timber Processing / May 2015) |
