Redundant Sensors Improve Precision and Reliability
Some machine processes, such as presses, can require extreme accuracy in applying and holding force on an object. A popular way to measure force is via load cells. But what do you do when the accuracy required by a particular application is higher than that guaranteed by the load cell manufacturer? (Tech Briefs August 2014)

Consider the Sensor - Don't let feedback problems impact your next machine design
Machine designers often view closed-loop motion control as involving one sensor per axis. Designers have had to consider it a fact of life that physical limits of sensors impact the capability and reliability of machine designs. But that doesn't need to be the case. If a motion controller could take inputs from multiple feedback devices, or mathematically manipulate the data coming from sensors, problems that have plagued machine builders would be reduced. Precise Controls Verify Oilfield Component Functionality
Certain industries have testing applications that require the exertion of large amounts of force. In those cases hydraulics is the power of choice, with an electrohydraulic motion controller performing closed-loop control to ensure that the force is applied with accuracy and precision.
An example of such a high-force testing environment is the system developed by Dril-Quip Inc., Houston, to verify the functionality and structural integrity of subsea oil-well connectors. Obviously, the safety and ecology of offshore oil operations depends on the utmost care being applied to ensure that the components of oil-production systems function as designed.
