Timber Processing and Energy Expo, Portland

Delta has been involved with the Timber Processing & Energy Expo since the 1980’s for two reasons: first, it is close by in Portland, OR, and second, it is directed toward the wood products market, Delta’s first industry focus and still it’s largest industry (although a much smaller percentage than it was many years ago).

It is always great to work that show and visit existing customers and talk to prospective customers.  Thanks to all of our readers that attended this show!

New Demo System Preparation

The more demo systems, the better, right?  In preparation for the Timber Processing & Energy Expo, Delta put together a 3-axis system to demonstrate precise synchronized motion.  This system adds to our selection of show demos, including the attention-getting 6DoF platform and the 2-cylinder press that demonstrate platen levelling with uneven loads.

The new 3-axis demo system uses three identical Parker cylinders with Temposonics R-series magnetostrictive position feedback. There are two ATOS and one Parker valves providing the oil control, getting command signals from Delta's RMC200. After a successful showing at the TP & EE show this past week, we plan to keep modifying this system for testing and demonstrating high performance hydraulic motion control. Look for this system at a tradeshow in the future!

Delta Webinars

Delta's webinar recordings continue to get very positive feedback from our users. We made these webinar sessions to show how to do some common motion control tasks using RMCTools and hydraulic systems. If you have not seen our webinars before we invite you to look through the recordings; you will surely find a helpful topic among these sessions.

This session begins by explaining Proportional, Integral, and Derivative gains and Feed-Forward terms in a tangible way. Then we tune up a basic hydraulic system for position control, discussing what cues to look for that indicate the tuning terms are correct.

This webinar covers another popular topic, tuning for pressure or force control. Using a basic hydraulic system with differential pressure feedback, we show how to tune the system to accurately control the force exerted by the cylinder.

Distributor Highlight

Delta's authorized distributor for Eastern Canada and the Maritime Provinces is MCS-Servo, located in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville. MCS-Servo is a highly qualified system integrator with many successful projects in the wood products and plastics industries in particular. Founded not long after Delta, in 1986, MCS-Servo has been providing their customers with top quality automation solutions for nearly 40 years.

MCS-Servo has acquired PH Technologies and GenHydrau in last few years, adding even more capability and product expertise to their portfolio of offerings. Delta extends our congratulations and thanks to MCS for the high quality service and support they provide to our mutual customers. We look forward to many years of successful growth in the future.

People at Delta

Chris Epp, Electronics Technician

Delta is pleased to welcome Chris Epp to our Production team. Chris joins us from several years' experience repairing consumer electronics, and he says he is enjoying the challenge of working with our RMC controllers. Chris also helps out with other tasks in Production, assisting with repairs, performing final testing and so on.

Chris says he appreciates the culture and attitude of Delta's team. He is especially enjoying the mentorship from the more experienced members of the Production group, learning the details of the RMC's and the production processes that go into them.

Welcome to the team, Chris!

Tech Tip

Adaptive Amplitude control

RMCTools has nearly 100 programmed commands, but it is impossible to have a command for every possible application. That is a good reason why RMCTools has the ability for users to write their own custom code to accomplish the specific task they need to achieve. This Tech Tip is a great example of using custom code.

In cyclic testing applications, where an actuator may follow a sinusoidal profile for many hundreds or thousands of cycles, it might not always be possible or desired for the actuator to precisely follow a target profile, especially at high frequencies. What is critical in this situation is that the actuator absolutely reach the minimum and maximum positions, or force values in the case of force control. In these situations, the Adaptive Amplitude control programming can be useful, as long as the application can tolerate some lag between the target profile and the actual profile.

RMCTools_high_res_plot

Delta offers a couple of example projects for Adaptive Amplitude control. The adaptive code will adjust the control output, and usually within a few system cycles the actual position or force will hit the target values and maintain them. These code examples can be downloaded from Delta's forum, either using this link or by going to forum.deltamotion.com and searching for "Adaptive Amplitude."
