Thank you for (our first) 40 great years

It is hard to believe that it has been 40 years since Delta started as a spin-off from a sawmill equipment controls company during one of the many downturns in the wood industry.  Over the years, Delta has evolved from a custom projects company into a manufacturing company with a focus on our own Delta-branded motion controllers selling products worldwide into a variety of applications.

At this milestone, I want to extend my gratitude on behalf of all of us at here at Delta. Without the support of our customers, distributors, contractors, and suppliers, Delta would not be what it is today. Each individual and business have help shape and contributed to the success of Delta as a company, and I am humbled and grateful for those contributions.

We have chosen to introduce a new logo, rebranding us as Delta Motion – words that reflect our commitment to bringing high performance motion control products to the market. Delta Motion is a summary of who we are, and where we are headed in the future.

Please note that we are not changing the company name at this point.  But stay tuned for a future announcement!

Thank you all for helping us with our success over our first 40 years. We invite you to come along with Delta Motion for the coming 40 years.

Delta Celebrates 40!

Delta Computer Systems, Inc. celebrates 40 years of business this month! Incorporated in 1982, the original plan for Delta was as an engineering project firm, with the founding partners bringing circuit design, programming and algorithm optimization, fabrication, and electronic testing and troubleshooting experience.  From those early years working with the forest products, metals, food processing, and power delivery industries, Delta has grown to become a leading provider of high-performance motion controllers for industrial applications.  As Delta reaches this milestone, our focus continues to be on providing the industrial automation market with the highest value motion control products: RMC family of motion controllers and our powerful and easy-to-use RMCTools software.

On Wednesday, June 30th, Delta welcomed a large number of former employees, businesspeople, vendors, customers, and end users to celebrate this milestone with us. Our guests enjoyed demonstrations of some of the industrial automation equipment we build, heard a presentation on Delta's history and the many individuals who were instrumental in the company's development, enjoyed delicious hors d'oeuvres, and saw a glimpse into some of Delta's plans for the future.

All of us at Delta extend our thanks to the individuals and businesses who have contributed to our success and growth throughout the past 40 years. We look forward to continued growth, development, and achievement in the future, with an unrelenting commitment to providing lasting value and outstanding performance.

Delta's New Logo

Our CEO Steve Nylund enjoys telling people that Delta Computer System, Inc's name was early on simply a matter of convenience. One of the founding partners, Dave Lee, already had a business license with the name "Delta Computer Systems," so it seemed logical (and one less thing to do,) to simply use that name for their new venture.

Over the years, Delta Computer System's business has evolved and grown as motion control became a larger and larger part of the company's revenue. That is why at this major landmark, Delta is choosing to unveil our new logo, Delta Motion. Sometime in the near future we also plan to change the name of the business to Delta Motion as well. Our commitment to lasting value products and outstanding, responsive customer service remains the same as always.  Delta Motion reflects our ongoing incremental improvement, and our focus on the finest quality motion control products we can design and build. We invite our longtime customers and the new customers we have yet to make to think of Delta Motion first when looking for fast, accurate, and precise motion control solutions.

Distributor Highlight

On Delta's anniversary, it seems appropriate to recognize all of the distributors who have contributed so much to our success. Delta's RMC motion controllers are the heart of a powerful motion control solution, but they work together with high-resolution feedback devices, precision valves, drives, and other systems management devices like PLCs or HMIs. Delta distributors supply all of these other items and frequently provide the knowledge and skill to assemble these components into a powerful and precise system for the end-user. In a very real way, Delta's distributors are the first customers that we serve, because these distributors in turn serve our end users.

A big thank you to each and every distribution organization from all of us at Delta, and we look forward to continued growth and success together in the coming years!

Tech Tip

High vs. Low Resolution Feedback

by Jacob Paso

We always encourage designers to get the highest resolution feedback possible when designing a high-performance hydraulic system, buy why is this? Recently we ran an test with two magnetostrictive position transducers to try and show the difference and advantages gained with high resolution vs. low resolution position sensors.

This plot shows acceleration calculated from position data from a 0.1μm resolution position sensor. The gray line and the left vertical scale is the acceleration and the red line is the position.
RMCTools_high_res_plot

Now compare with this plot which is using data from a 20μm resolution position sensor. The gray line and vertical scale are the calculated accelerations and the red line is the actuator position. Notice that the calculated position is very noisy, and is clustered around a few discrete values. This is what gives the blocky appearance to the acceleration plot. Notice too that the calculated accelerations are approximately 4 times the min/max values from the higher resolution plot, above.
RMCTools_low_res_plot

The conclusion here is that even if the positioning requirements of your system are low, you can give the motion controller extra information on velocity and acceleration by choosing a high resolution position feedback. If the motion controller has good velocity and acceleration data, this can make the system much more controllable; you might be able to use higher-order control algorithms as an example, which make a difficult system noticeably easier to use.

So when possible, choose the highest resolution position feedback you can to improve controllability.
