Optimizing Cylinder Size for Precise Control
“Engineering ‘rules-of-thumb’ and idealized approximations can yield safe, functional machines; but they will rarely if ever result in the most efficient and effective system. Considering the control system first, then specifying hydraulic cylinders for the maximum load, velocity, and accelerations achieves better results. The benefits are lower individual component costs, smooth, rapid, and precise machine motion, less machine wear and tear, and lower operating costs due to increased efficiency."

New Motion Controller Increases Throughput in Maxi Mill Upgrade
“Maxi Mill Inc. of Albany, Oregon makes primary breakdown log processors, called end-doggers by the forest products industry. The processors hold logs by their ends from overhead carriages. . . , which move to carry the logs past stationary band saws that cut the logs into square cants or two-sided cants, depending on the size of the logs. The carriage makes multiple passes based on the solution from the optimizer. In order to present each log for pickup by the carriage, it is moved into place by y-shaped chargers. To produce the best quality cant, before the cutting begins, the log is moved to the center of the carriage at which point it is skewed right/left and up/down and rotated, based on information from the optimizer. To precisely coordinate and control the complex motion involved requires a capable multi-axis motion control solution."

Staying on the Grind
“For more than 25 years, Clansman Dynamics of East Kilbride, Scotland has been involved in material handling and processing technologies to support the metals foundry industry. Chief among those technologies is the design and construction of state-of-the-art robotic systems. Clansman robots lift and move castings as well as manipulate grinding heads to smooth off imperfections that result from the casting process. The robots are hydraulically powered to carry or exert heavy loads, and survive in harsh environments that involve a lot of external forces and vibrations.."

Motion Controller Gives Old Presses New Life
“A recent retrofit project at a manufacturer and rebuilder of hydraulic presses involved the upgrade of the press controls on four older hydraulic presses before installing them at a truck component manufacturing plant in Monterrey, Mexico. The 2,340-ton presses, originally manufactured by Hoesch in Germany, use two main cylinders (1,170 tons each) for the moving platen and four leveling cylinders (125 tons each) to mold and in-mold coat large glass fiber body parts for trailer truck cabins.
Before arriving at Macrodyne Technologies Inc. of Concord, Ontario, for refurbishing, the presses had been disassembled and all electrical controls were removed. Macrodyne could choose what control system to use in the press rebuild. The moving platen would be controlled through a new programmable logic controller (PLC), and the levelling cylinders would be controlled by a new electrohydraulic motion controller."

Universal Input/Output Module Released for RMC200
Delta Computer Systems, Inc. announces the immediate availability of the U14 Universal Input/Output module for the RMC200 motion controllers. The new U14 module combines several different input and output types in a single module, increasing configuration flexibility, including allowing RMC200 configurations from 2-axis to 32-axis, in 2-axis steps.
The U14 complements the high-density RMC200 I/O modules with a smaller number of a wide variety of I/O types. With the U14, users can add up to two extra control axes, bring in a variety of different reference input signals, or simply add additional analog and discrete I/O, all within a single module. The U14 analog I/O features four 18-bit resolution analog inputs and two analog drive outputs that are software selectable between ±10 V, 4-20mA, or ±20mA. Two high-speed channels are software selectable as Serial Synchronous Interface (SSI), Magnetostrictive Start/Stop or Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM), or Quadrature encoder inputs. Two high-speed discrete inputs provide homing or registration for the high-speed channels. Finally, there are four configurable, individually isolated discrete 24 Vdc I/O points.

Delta Discussion Forum
Did you know that Delta hosts a Discussion Forum on our website? The Forum is another place for Delta to share information with our customers, and provides a place where Delta users across the country and around the world to share useful information about RMC Controllers and RMCTools software. Using the Forum, you can find (and post) application tips, browse lists of third-party companion products we have tested in our development lab, and check out program examples ready for download. The Forum also allows you to enter requests for new features and provide an alternative method to ask questions of Delta Application Engineers
If you haven't visited Delta's Discussion Forum before, we invite you to browse the site and perhaps register for a user account.
