Precise Hydraulic Controls Help Create Spectacular Special Effects for the World's Largest Underwater Moveable Stage
Hydraulics has long had a role in theatrical productions where heavy stages and scenery need to moved smoothly and safely. One of the most recent projects to be completed is also one of the most spectacular. The House of Dancing Water show in Macau's City of Dreams complex uses eight underwater platform sections on hydraulic lifts that make up the main stage platform. (Fluid Power - Nov/Dec 2011)

Motion Control Critical to One of a Kind Stage
House of the Dancing Waters Macau, China

Although veteran entertainment producer Patrice Bilodeau and designer Mark Labelle are well know in the industry for overcoming difficult engineering challenges, they had never encountered anything as large as the City of Dreams and Franco Dragone Entertainment Group's House of Dancing Water (Macau, China). Saw Lines Integration
A tightly integrated saw line that can turn raw logs into made-to-measure finished lumber in a single processing pass requires a lot of coordination between the sequential process stages. Some of the more complex saw lines can contain several dozen motion axes that need to be controlled. Individual machine stations can involve as few as two axes (as is the case with a log rotator), whereas other stations, such as the curve saw, can employ between five and eight axes. Are Hydraulics the Way to Improve Machine Efficiency?
What's the most efficient power source for your machine? It depends, of course. Does the application involve a lot of back and forth motion where there are heavy loads to be moved or held, or where there are a large number of motion axes involved? If so, fluid power, specifically hydraulics, can be a more efficient power source than electric motors. In applications with these characteristics, a hydraulic power unit (HPU) with a single, controllable hydraulic pump along with an accumulator can be much more energy-efficient than linear electric motors or rotary electric motors with gear boxes or pulleys.
