Delta Announces Membership in the Open DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA)

Delta Computer Systems, Inc. announced membership in Open DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA), the worldwide organization supporting growth of DeviceNet™ and EtherNet/IP™.

EtherNet/IP™ delivers the one feature that has eluded the Ethernet automation community: deterministic performance. "ODVA membership reinforces our message of Open Systems for communication with the RMC family of motion controllers," according to Delta's CEO, Steve Nylund.

ODVA membership grants access to an organization that supports worldwide growth of DeviceNet™ and EtherNet/IP™, two industrial networks based on open standards. Both networks share a common object model - the Control and Information Protocol (CIP) - for seamless communication from the plant floor to the boardroom.

Delta's initial interest is in EtherNet/IP™ with future DeviceNet™ consideration in the Delta product pipeline. Recognizing early on the value of Ethernet in concert with Motion Control, Delta was one of the first to have its EtherNet/IP™ products certified.

EtherNet/IP™ is an industrial networking standard that takes advantage of commercial off-the-shelf Ethernet communication chips and physical media. IP, on the other hand, stands for 'industrial protocol' and is what distinguishes this network. Unlike many options in the industrial Ethernet crowd, EtherNet/IP™ uses an open protocol at the application layer. Further, more than one vendor or organization backs EtherNet/IP™. It is the only standard supported by three networking organizations: ControlNet International (CI), the Industrial Ethernet Association (IEA) and the Open DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA).

EtherNet/IP™ enables interoperable Ethernet products from an unparalleled community of vendors. Delta will continue to be one of them.

See http://www.odva.org/ for further information on ODVA, DeviceNet™ and EtherNet/IP™.
